WHAT IS TOBOSA?

About Us

Tobosa Developmental Services is a nonprofit with 47 years of experience, serving as Southeast New Mexico’s leading provider of services for individuals with developmental delays and disabilities.

We offer a range of programs, including Childhood Development Services and the Tobosa/Little Steps Learning Center, providing personalized care and innovative programs for growth and independence. Our mission is to support individuals and families in leading their best lives, backed by well-trained staff following the latest best practices.

Our services include around-the-clock care, occasional check-ins, Respite Care for caregivers, and Employment Services to help clients find meaningful work. Los Pasitos provides free Early Intervention services for children from birth to three with developmental delays, while Little Steps Learning Center offers inclusive childcare and education for children aged 1 to 12, fostering growth in a supportive environment.

How Tobosa Began

Over 40 years ago, New Mexico closed its mental institutions, releasing many individuals into unprepared communities. To address this, family advocates in Roswell founded Tobosa in 1978, providing essential care and support to individuals with disabilities who had been previously isolated in institutions.

Early Days

In the early days, our founding families supported one another through activities for children, hot lunches, and carpools. While these efforts helped us in the short term, we recognized the need for strategic planning to tackle future challenges. As we grew, we shared success stories across Roswell and played a vital role in providing developmental services for individuals with disabilities, with therapy designed for their individual needs.

Where We Are Today

Under the leadership of Executive Director Curt Harrison, alongside our dedicated staff, supportive families, and compassionate community, we have successfully brought our vision to life. What started with nine staff and a budget of $112,000 has expanded to 195 employees and a $10 million budget. This growth reflects our commitment to serving individuals with developmental disabilities. We advocate for their needs and aim to eliminate stigma while creating a safe space for them to thrive. Initially a family advocacy initiative, we have become the leading support center in Chaves County, helping individuals with developmental disabilities live fulfilling lives.
