How Tobosa Began

Tobosa’s story began in 1978 when families in Roswell came together to advocate for individuals with developmental disabilities after the closure of New Mexico’s mental institutions left many people without adequate support or resources.

Early Days

What started as a grassroots effort quickly became a strong network of families supporting one another through shared meals, carpools, and children’s activities. United by compassion and determination, these early advocates worked to create a community where individuals with disabilities could live with dignity, connection, and opportunity.

As the needs of families grew, Tobosa expanded its services to provide personalized therapies, developmental support, and community-based programs designed to help individuals thrive at every stage of life. Over time, the organization evolved into a trusted nonprofit serving children, adults, and families across Roswell and southeastern New Mexico.

Where We Are Today

Today, Tobosa continues to build on that original mission through programs such as Early Intervention, the Learning Center, Supported Living, Employment Services, and more. We remain committed to breaking down barriers, promoting inclusion, and creating supportive environments where every person has the opportunity to grow, connect, and succeed.

For more than four decades, Tobosa has remained rooted in compassion, advocacy, and community, continuing the work that local families began with the simple belief that everyone deserves support, respect, and the chance to thrive.
